Heather walter books7/5/2023 Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.īecause we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Even though it was a power like mine that was responsible for her curse.īut with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating-and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss. Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die.

The novel is committed to a holistic sense of balance - to showing us the inner lives of a full ensemble of characters in colorful, compelling depth. Part of that greatness might also be its biggest weakness, depending on the reader. Topicality aside, it’s simply a great book. But those aren’t the only reasons you should read it. Take Meg Wolitzer’s highly anticipated twelfth novel, The Female Persuasion, which is being trumpeted as a specifically feminist triumph, a novel that’s “ right for the #MeToo moment,” and that “ captures our era’s gender politics.” Yes, it is, and it does. By contrast, any secondary female character in a recent DC or Marvel movie would love an arc as nuanced and interesting as Jessica’s neighbor, Malcolm. (They are usually talking, as they should be, about Jessica Jones.)Įven there, male characters are developed and intelligent, with their own goals, thoughts, and feelings. Do female artists treat men better than male artists treat women? Take, for example, the second season of Jessica Jones, which plants you in a deeply reverse-Bechdel-test world where minutes, if not hours, can pass before two men are seen onscreen together, let alone talking about someone or something besides a woman.

Sphere michael crichton review7/4/2023 Setting the story aside for a moment, the film is a work of art. Composer Elliot Goldenthal conjures wonder in the fashion of “2001” and “Contact” and fear in the nature of “The Abyss” and “Event Horizon” – both of which hit theaters first but post-date the “Sphere” novel.Īdam Greenberg’s underwater cinematography complements Goldenthal’s score with its own strange, dark beauty. Writers: Stephen Hauser, Paul Attanasio (screenplay) Kurt Wimmer (adaptation) Michael Crichton (novel) And it’s clear this is an expensive movie, with a lot of the money going to the sets: a habitat for the explorers, and a huge spaceship of unknown origin that contains an alien sphere. Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Writers Stephen Hauser and Paul Attanasio, working from an adaptation by Kurt Wimmer, are faithful to Crichton’s book in structure and characters. The group of scientists and explorers are played by an all-star cast, including Dustin Hoffman as the steady psychiatrist, Sharon Stone as the jittery biologist, Samuel L. Jackson as the “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”-obsessed mathematician, Liev Schreiber as the enthusiastic knowledge-seeker and Peter Coyote as the gruff Navy boss.

Though It’s obvious that that title The Hate U Give came from Tupac, there are many other hidden places in the book that Tupac inspired! Starr Carter So when I saw that in the video, it was like a sign.” Tupac and The Hate U Give We see it in the form of anger and we see it in the form of riots. When these unarmed black people lose their lives, the hate they’ve been given screws us all. Jasmine guillory the wedding party7/3/2023 Minisode shownotes are not timestamped, but linked titles are below for you to peruse. I hope you love it!Īnd, as always, we’ll end with a book she wants to press into your hands, readers! In this “minisode”, Kaytee and Jasmine discuss so much food you’ll be hungry when you’re done (I recommend listening during your lunch hour)! We also talk about enemies-to-lovers tropes, the challenges and benefits of including real talk about race in an otherwise light book, and what it’s like to be part of the Reese Witherspoon/Hello Sunshine book club! It’s a great conversation and Jasmine was a total delight. This minisode, with a romance writer, is not really kid-friendly, so do take note! Guillory got the idea for The Wedding Date (a doctor and government staffer meet cute in a stuck elevator) in early 2015 and jotted down the major plot points on my phone, she said. In today’s spoiler-free mini-episode, I (Kaytee) am chatting with Jasmine Guillory, author of this summer’s smash contemporary romance The Wedding Party. |
